AGRI FOOD - THE OLIVE

The geographic and geological conditions and a mild climate of the Ebro Lands have favoured since ancient times the cultivation of the olive and the production of the oil of balanced scents. In fact, the oil elaborated in the regions of Low Ebro, Montsià and the High Land have been recognized with two designations of origin: D.O. Baix Ebre Montsià and D.O. Terra Alta that certify its quality, an award for effort of the producers that preserve the tradition of a millennial cultivation, that even with the pass of the centuries still preserves its roots. In fact, nowadays the Ebro Lands amounts nearly the 40% of the production of oil of Catalonia, an activity which has happened one of the most important active of the agricultural economy of the region.

From November to February, the olive cooperatives of the Ebro Lands welcome the first olive oil of the season, with a set of festive celebrations that include popular meals, as well as the exhibitions and debates, days of open doors and the presentation, tasting and sale of the new oil. A good example of all these activities is the oil fair that is celebrated in several villages of these regions.
